2023, Biochemical PharmacologyCitation Excerpt :Similar to UVB irradiation [60], exposure to cigarette smoke leads to the induction of the AHR-dependent genes CYP1A1, CYP1B1 and matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) [63]. MMP-1 is also induced in the skin of smokers [64] where it leads to collagen breakdown in the dermis, tissue remodeling and promotion of skin aging [65]. In line with that, a knockdown of MMP-1 resulted in inhibition of the progression of colorectal cancer via suppression of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway downstream of EGFR.

2021, Journal of Investigative DermatologyCitation Excerpt :Cigarette smoke is another exposomal factor that contributes to extrinsic skin aging (Figure 1; Krutmann et al., 2017). The major skin-aging effect of cigarette smoke is skin wrinkling, particularly around the mouth, the upper lid, and eyes (Aizen and Gilhar, 2001; Doshi et al., 2007; Koh et al., 2002), and MMP-1 mRNA expression, as a surrogate marker of increased collagen breakdown, is increased in smoker’s skin compared with that in nonsmoker’s skin (Lahmann et al., 2001). Mechanistic studies indicate a role for AHR signaling and disturbed TGFβ signaling in cigarette smoke‒induced collagen breakdown (Ono et al., 2013; Yin et al., 2003).
