2014, Handbook of Clinical NeurologyCitation Excerpt :In a study of 100 HIV-infected military personnel with syphilis, four of seven persons with reactive cerebrospinal fluid VDRL relapsed following high-dose intravenous penicillin. Relapses were often observed more than 12 months after initial therapy (Malone et al., 1995). Other investigators, however, have found good clinical and serologic responses to standard penicillin regimens in the HIV-infected population with syphilis (Bordon et al., 1999).
