On the one hand, many psychological studies document that ambient air pollution can trigger increases in bodily cortisol levels, a hormone produced by the adrenal cortex of the human body (Hsieh et al., 1991; Tomei et al., 2003). Cortisol plays a critical role in the psychological and behavioral responses to physical or psychological challenges (Coates and Herbert, 2008).

2021, Neurotoxicology and TeratologyCitation Excerpt :Given that both hyper- and hypoactivity of the HPA axis have been associated with suicide risk, HPA axis dysregulation induced by toluene inhalation may represent multiple risk pathways at different time points, with hyperactivity increasing anxiety-related risks, and hypoactivity following chronic exposure influencing the ability to adaptively respond to stressors. This is not mechanistically implausible; acute exposure to toluene can act as a stressor, with increased corticosterone release and HPA axis-hyperactivity (Hsieh et al., 1991). Continued toluene exposure may then lead to compensatory down-regulation of the HPA axis (Gądek-Michalska et al., 2013) and/or adrenocortical hypertrophy reducing the responsivity of the HPA axis (Gotohda et al., 2005).
