2015, Sensors and Actuators, B: ChemicalCitation Excerpt :In recent years, there have been a number of reports on the diagnostic use of saliva showing different levels of homocysteine (HCy) [4–7] and glutathione (GSH) [1,2,5,7–11] concentrations having possible implications to deleterious conditions, such as diabetes [12], cardiovascular diseases [4,7], xerostomia (dry mouth) [3], halitosis (breath malodour) [2,13], and periodontitis [1,2,10,11]. These reports suggest that patients suffering from these diseases show differences in thiol concentrations in whole saliva as compared to healthy control subjects [1,2,4,5,8,10]. These reports also indicate that the salivary thiol concentrations from apparently healthy subjects are within the same range observed in human blood plasma (Table 1).

In the oral cavity, the first organ to encounter CS, carbonylation was observed in gingival fibroblasts (Colombo et al., 2012) and enzymatic dysfunction was induced in salivary proteins (Nagler et al., 2000; Weiner et al., 2008; Avezov et al., 2014). Acrolein high chemical reactivity is due to its double bond which reacts with -SH (thiol) groups of proteins (Kehrer and Biswal, 2000).

2014, Archives of Oral BiologyCitation Excerpt :It is noteworthy that the activity reduction due to unsaturated aldehyde content is parallel in all the five isoenzymes, probably because the 3-D structural alteration location is identical in all of the isoenzymes. The current study, showed an increased carbonyl content in a specific enzyme, therefore supporting previous studies [26,27] connecting reduction in salivary enzyme activity such as amylase and unsaturated aldehyde content of CS. Thus, LDH enzyme modification by CS may serve as a model system for certain salivary protein dysfunction.
