Plain Language Summary

This article tells the story of my medical journey across two continents—beginning as a student in the United Arab Emirates, training in Canada, and eventually returning home to practice and lead in the field of rheumatology.

In Canada, I faced the challenges of adapting to a new culture, living independently, and learning in a very different healthcare system. With the support of mentors, I grew both personally and professionally, gaining lessons in accountability, teamwork, and patient-centered care.

When I returned to the UAE, my role shifted from trainee to leader. I helped establish new clinics, guided treatment recommendations, trained young doctors, and worked with researchers across the region and internationally.

This story shows how global experiences and mentorship can shape a physician's vision and contribute to strengthening healthcare systems in parts of the world where specialties like rheumatology are still growing.
