Only a few decades ago, a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis in sub-Saharan Africa was considered so exceptional that it effectively merited publication as a case report.1,2 Even if it existed at all, the thought that inflammatory arthritis could play any problematic role on health in Africa was considered ridiculous.
