Immune checkpoints are intrinsic downregulators of the immune system. Whereas in rheumatology, immune checkpoints are enhanced to turn off the immune response and treat autoimmunity, in cancer, immune checkpoints are inhibited to turn on the immune system, allowing immune recognition and destruction of tumor cells.
