John Varga, Christopher P. Denton, Fredrick M. Wigley, editors. New York: Springer, 2012, 689 pages, $279 US

There have been tremendous advances in the understanding and management of scleroderma over the past decade. Scleroderma. From Pathogenesis to Comprehensive Management is a compendium of the current state of scleroderma knowledge, and highlights these advances. With 689 pages subdivided into 10 parts, this book spans the breadth of topics in scleroderma: epidemiology, genetics, and classification; scleroderma in children; other fibrosing skin conditions; pathogenesis; cardiovascular, pulmonary, and gastrointestinal manifestations and management; disease modifying strategies; and outcome assessment. Each section is comprehensive, easily readable, and well referenced. The tables, figures, and color photographs complement the text. The treatment sections are up-to-date and encourage the practice of evidence-based medicine. With 88 contributors, the book reflects the insights and experiences of the global systemic sclerosis expert community.

The editors remark that “the future for scleroderma research and for affected patients has never been brighter.” After reading this book, one believes that this statement is undoubtedly correct. The book is well suited to all healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with scleroderma. The scope and breadth of information presented is superior to that found in a standard rheumatology text. This book is highly recommended, and should be a necessary text in any academic medical library.
